Visual Hallucinations - Charles Bonnet Syndrome

Charles Bonnet syndrome (or CBS for short) is a term used to describe the situation when people with sight problems start to see things which they know aren't real. Sometimes called visual hallucinations the things people see can take all kinds of forms from simple patterns of straight lines to detailed pictures of people or buildings. These can be enjoyable or sometimes upsetting.

Thank god for this post. It has given my mother some peace of mind. She has Macular Degeneration and has been seeing visions for sometime. I believe she was misdiagnosed as everything this lovely lady says has happened to Mom. Not the same visions exactly, but similar in nature. She is glad she is not alone. I will run this by the doc to see what he has to say, but feel this might very well be it. Thank you for posting.

The biggest problem for her is that she is extremely stubborn and in addition to being nearly blind she is also very hard or hearing so it is next to impossible to comunicate with her. The other problem is that because she is almost blind when she wakes up from (what we think are her dreams) she cannot seperate what is just a dream and what is reality. However, that is not to say that all of these incidents happen when she is in bed because they also tend to happen during the day as well.

My grandmother appears to have this syndrome however the only difference is that she DOES NOT seem to know that what she is seeing is NOT real! She could just be having what they call TIAs (mini strokes) but I have never read any where that hallucinations as a symptom of TIAs or strokes. My impression of my grandmother is that if she sees it, it must be real. But, she DOES "come out of it" eventually so perhaps it is something else entirely?

My Mum has just been diagnosed with CBS - and thank goodness the GP was aware from the start what this illness was. This posting has helped us understand emotionally and very speedily what is a very big problem for her. Despite some of the unfortunate silliness posted on YouTube this is an example of how life affirming this technology can be. Thank you very much.

my grandmother suffered from it last night for the 1st while visiting us. We got quite scared, as she has glaucoma but she was seeing a sunlike glare, and then there was a brickwall standing in front of her.

late at night we discovered about Charles Bonnet, and told my grandmother. She was quite relieved when she heard about it, and ONLY THEN told us about other allucinations she had... she saw small children with pacifiers, sitting in her bed.

Thank you for posting this. last year my Gran started having hallucinations, she was terrified! She was seeing all sorts of things from the walls and ceiling being covered in bright patterns, to dogs growling in her face, victorian woman with snakes slithering into their mouths, the list goes on. she thought she was "going mad". thankfuly CBS was diagnosed. It must have been so frightening for her as she is widowed & lives alone.

There needs to be more awareness raised of this condition!
