"A Hazy Shade of Winter" is a song written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966 for their 1968 album, Bookends (although it also appeared on their Live from New York City, 1967). It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the second most popular song on the album after "Mrs. Robinson," which earlier reached #1.

The lyrics evoke the passage of the seasons, but (as the title suggests) focusing on the gloominess of winter. The chorus of the song repeats:

But look around,
leaves are brown now
And the sky
is a hazy shade of winter

Look around,
leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground.

Haha. I'll admit seeing those types of comments drive me insane after a while since they're so repetitive, but then I remember their age and that they're spending life trying to be different from everyone else and find themselves.

Not to mention in a world where everyone's focus is to progress and rather rapidly too; it's nice to hear once in a while that younger people like to hear oldies but goodies.

What sounds an individual person finds pleasing is no measure of how cultured a person, although it can identify them with a subculture. This is an important disticntion, and I would suggest you learn more about both cultural anthropology and music theory before you make sweeping generalizations and marking how 'cultured' people are. Such an ignorant term to use - culture can not be measured in a person; or if you mean it synonymously with 'refined' your statement would be oxymoroninc.

Pop, Rock and much of Rap are most definitely comparable... They have their origins in the same place, and share a lot of common elements. Just look at the pop-punk chord progression which underpins songs like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" (The Smashing Pumpkins) "Poker Face" (Lady Gaga) and "Love the way you lie" (Eminem ft. Rhianna) which belong to each genre I, respectively. Even Dubstep isn't so different: it's electronic dance music - an extension of the Disco-Pop music from the '90's.

Good music transcends time......this is version sounds just as good, and just as fresh, as it did in 1966. Great stuff!

Oh please, don't think that just because you listen to Simon and Garfunkel you're better than everyone else, or that all modern music is crap. We live in a world where modern rock, rap, pop and dubstep are given an equal chance. You can't compare pop to rock because they are completely different genres. You can compare rock to rock, or pop to pop, but don't think one makes you more elite. I listen to pop just as much as old-school music. That's the mark of a cultured person.

Forgot all about this great song until hearing it attached to a TV ad recently, very moody and almost atmospheric.. The 13 year olds who like these are mature beyond their years and have an ear for quality evergreen type music...

@Alan Halpin No. I'm practically alienated when it comes to my musical preferences. I'm practically the only one in my grade who thinks that virtually all modern pop songs are garbage! I think this is a good song, even though I prefer the Bangles version.
