@ekstradycja David was awesome in this film, I was happy they cast an artist. He added gravitas to his role, even if he had few speaking parts. It really is a masterpiece

yes indeed, this is Andrzej Wajda's masterpiece, the film got few Cezarres, Luis Delluc Award and BAFTA, Robespierre's side was played by polish actors and Danton's by French ones, as for the light and colour,Wajda was inspired by David's paintings (the character of David in this film is played by polish marvellous artist Franciszek Starowieyski)
