Forget the microscopes. Gene sequencers, microarrays and mass spectrometers are the tools of the trade for today's biologists. Huge advances in technology and computing have revolutionized the field, and instead of breaking living things down into smaller and smaller parts, biologists are looking at the systems that make up living things, reaching out to other disciplines, and trying to get a grip on the eternal mystery: what, exactly, is life? There's been a paradigm shift in the science of life, and it's called systems biology.

  • I was smiling throughout this whole entire video. I was so happy that our world's knowledge is growing. A couple more years I will be a cell biologist and cannot wait to work with other great scientist. I have my own small lab at my own home and studying about genetics with my little cute pet mice.

  • someone should make an online game which involves sequencing dna.

  • amazing work

  • I'm not a biologist but this is also of philosophical interest .Today we have computers that can work on truly vast amounts of data .Much more than all humans combined .But there are problems ,like how to ask a computer to look for something unusual ,odd or unexpected .

  • Simplified but a very good introduction to systems biology. Currently studying this in my Masters in Biomolecular Structure and Function.

  • I really like it.

  • Great video, I like it.
