Yes you can mount Batter Badges on the underside of the drumhead, but it will have less attack sound. Also, you can use them on the resonant head (Like Tony Williams style with Power Dots) of larger tom-toms to control ring and make the drum sound heavier. Badges protect the head best when mounted on top. Mount the Batter Badges under the drumhead to control tone especially on snare drums when using brushes.
Actually it is an old Slingerland shell with that metal bass hoop. It is a Slingerland kit used for drum lessons. It is not too loud but has nice tone.
Soo...let me ask, why do you use an old MIJ Star bass drum to record with? I happen to love them, I just want to know why if you can have your choice of drums, you choose a Star 9 ply 67-73 shell?

if i put the power badges on the underside of the batter, will i still get the some of the same features? have you guys experimented on that before?
