@daimyoyo - Wrong. Her explanation is correct. The fire combines the oxygen with the carbon from the wood making carbon dioxide (and possibly a small amount of carbon monoxide). It also combines some of hydrogen from the wood with oxygen to produce water (as steam). what do you think happens to the oxygen? Does it just disappear? Of course it doesn't. The egg will not be pushed into the bottle until AFTER the flames die down.

This is not how the egg trick works. It works because the fire consumes the oxygen in a chemical reaction. The lack of oxygen creates a vacuum, which in turn forces the egg through the bottle.
