Ant queen mite terror

It was not without shock and disgust when I discovered today that one of my low-performing queens was in fact struggling with mites! I wasn't aware of that because I didn't look closer. I know that this is not what you like to see, if you are fond of ants. Anyway, after some inner struggle I decided to post this. May it give you an idea of what mites are, how they stick to ants, suck their energy, immobilize them, destroy their brood and just give them a horrible time. This queen I suppose was in contact with the mites just when I picked her up in July. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the pest, I just saw that the queen had difficulties with brood and didn't realize early enough what that white dust in the tube could tell me. Mites may also come to your ants with food you carelessly offer without scalding to eliminate potential threats to your colony.

Did you use something to get rid of mites?

I removed them manually with cotton batting (very carefully) and a fine paint brush. See my other videos to find out how well "mity" is today! Free of mites.

just a question what are ants good for besides rotting away at carpus they bite even when im not messing with them? glad your queen is better now

oh, without ants, our planet would look different! there are thousands of ant-plant relationships where they help each other (symbiosis), they kill millions of vermin every day, and they open the soil by digging, many young plants can grow through their help.
