In June 2009 Melanesian activists (from Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands) met in Madang (Papua New Guinea) to discuss the defence of indigenous land. At this meeting they created the Melanesian Indigenous Land Defence Alliance. In this short documentary they explain why customary land is so important and why MILDA was formed to defend it.

  • hey im african i support you guys freedom usa send word out to U.S.A

  • I have lived in several Melanesian countries and having seen the Koreans / Chinese in action logging and just running busineeses in PNG, the Solomons and Vanuatu I cannot but help sympathise with these guys.

The most relevent case in point is perhaps in the Solomons. The heartening thing here is these people are articulate and come across as decent people, not some rabid mob of animals like you see in Australia, the UK or the US!

  • Land is everything to the indigenous people of Papua New Guinea.

  • I'm not Melanesian but I lived in a Melanesian country, New Caledonia, and I'm steeped in this culture, this magnificent culture. I have never seen such people, very welcoming, especially in Europe, people are so unfriendly !

In any case proud to be an adopted melanesian !

  • Proud to be Polynesian!

  • that is so true! land is worth way more than money!
