Sunday 26th July 1992, Boro host Celtic for Tony Mowbrays testimonial match. The game finished 1-1 but will be remembered mainly for the unprecedented invasion of Middlesbrough of 10,000 mostly "in drink" Celtic supporters. The jovial booze fuelled atmos was soured temporarily as some Celtic fans - one of which began to comically threaten an innocent camera-man - got onto the pitch at half time. However, the potentially nasty situation soon fizzled out and at the end of the match Tony Mowbray gave the Holgate a final wave, kissed his Boro scarf and trotted off a great ovation. Everyone was happy including the Binmen of The Boro who banked some unexpected overtime clearing away the empties the following morning!
4, double the SPL. But it is generally a more competitive, tighter league. In the SPL, Celtic and Rangers are usually 10-20 points clear of anyone else by the end of the season. In the premier league the top 10 can be much tighter.
