  • Emacs is the way to go. For c++ it would be qt creator. Just cant stand VS for a couple of reasons, one is how you use external libraries and also that I don't have windows installed on my main machine right now.

  • Turbo C++ is the best IDE.

  • @graceoverall Yo dont say!?

  • I absolutely love VS for anything .NET related or any kind of Windows based programming. It's gotten strides better over the years with much better Intellisense support for Javascript, CSS and the like as well. I don't think any Windows based developer would argue with that. When you start talking about Unix-based development however, there's where you get into some heated debate over Vim, Emacs, Coda, etc, lol.

  • @misbooon Notepad++ isn't an IDE, it's a text editor with syntax highlighting and little more.

  • WPF and c# are so unbelievably far superior to java, php, the whole open source stack. I work full time with open source and when I go home I work with WPF and c#. Part time I get far more done at home than I do at work. Probably about by a factor of 10. Open source is such a racket. Hey, I hate Microsoft. I worked there for six months and it sucked so bad, I quit. Open source is just too much all over the place. They can't focus and coordinate like Microsoft can.

  • @JoshTruff Add VisualAssist if you are doing c++. It makes life SO much better. C# use VisualAssist too, but I prefer ReSharper for c#

  • Visual Studio + ReSharper plugin = the best combo ever.

  • @misbooon I like netbeans.

  • Any real developer knows that no IDE compares to Visual Studio. Testing and debugging are much easier to do. The .NET framework and designer tools totally increase production time.
