  • The poster of this vid obviously didn't understand anything. This scene doesn't contrast asian and western way of eating. It contrasts enjoying food or not enjoying it, it contrasts enjoying life or not enjoying it. That's the point of this scene, and i guess it's obvious for which of thse two alternatives the film wants us to choose. :)

One of the best films ever.

  • @M4rsu I guess you can look at this scene in different ways. I don't think that when you don't make a lot of noise you necessarily enjoy food more. When I wrote that blurb about the scene I had in mind a conversation I had with a Japanese man. He was eating noodles quietly (not in Japan) and said that his parents would be angry (or ashamed, I can't remember) with him for eating that way. Because in their mind eating quietly is the impolite way, not because you don't enjoy the food that way.

  • I don't think the film is trying to make an argument that certain table manner protocols are better than others. Itami is using the contradiction between the sensei's instructions and the behavior of the foreigner to create a very funny situation. He was a genius at taking very ordinary, mundane topics (food, income taxes, a funeral, etc.) and creating hilarious situations.

  • @daver667 omae kangaesugida. EAT AND ENJOY K THANKS.

  • clearly the guy is honoring japanese customs

  • @M4rsu but I thought we liked food for the taste.. not how we eat it, or how its presented. Psht, semantics. HA. You aren't going to slurp something that tastes like shit now are you

  • but as an Asian myself I agree that we eat noodle's slurpingly hahaha. but so do westerners who don't care. I think it shows a little bit of both... the culture clash and joy of life.

  • 2:54 taser sounds? XDDD

  • @kw271

I thought Japan was purposely trying to be assimilated by the West, since Asia (China, North Korea, and South Korea to be specific) in the east had immense Anti-Japanese sentiments (before WWII, when America started to do it). Then when WWII started, it was extremely hard because of the propaganda floating around.

  • lol too used to slurping noodles in Japan. =]

  • Hahaha they are eating spaghetti as they eat udon or other japanese noodles xD, I find it difficult tu slurp spaghetti that way haha with udon is really easy because it's a lot more slippery, so it's better to slup it cuz it's really hard to take it with the Chop sticks! XD

  • Everyone here has it wrong. I lived in Japan for close to ten years. This scene has nothing to do with "Western Imperialism". It shows how the Japanese try to do everything perfectly, and in the process end up following the lead of this obviously foreign man to avoid a loss of face. The man either has no couth or else lives in Japan and has gotten used to the Japanese way of eating noodles. It's comedy, people. Comedy based on irony.
