Nana (ナナ, Nana) is a Japanese shōjo manga series written and illustrated by Ai Yazawa, serialised in Cookie published by Shueisha. There is an anime adaptation, as well as two live-action films. The first twelve volumes of the manga series have cumulatively sold over 22 million copies.As in 2005, it has sold over 34,500,000 making it the fourth best selling shōjo manga worldwide. The manga derives its title from the name of the two main characters, both of whom are called Nana. What sets them apart, however, is the stark difference between their lives. One Nana comes from a small town, following along with her friends and boyfriend, looking for a goal to obtain, while the other Nana's goal is set on making her dream and band, Black Stones, among the best. The two Nanas are brought together in what has become a major success for Ai Yazawa and the shōjo genre.[citation needed]

Nana is presently being released in North America by Viz Media. It ended its serialization in the August 2007 issue of Shojo Beat and was replaced by Honey and Clover. It will continue, however, to be released in tankobon (graphic novel format). The manga has also been adapted into a highly successful live-action film with a sequel released on December 9, 2006, and an anime adaptation that premiered on April 5, 2006. The anime adaptation has subsequently been announced as licensed for release in North America by Viz Media. In 2003, the manga won the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo.

As of July 1, 2008, there are 11 volumes available in English in the United States, with a 12th volume set to be released on September 2nd.

its been three years since i discovered nana and its still my fav anime/manga and even though ai yazawa obviously isnt going to finish it (which gets me pissed -.-) i still respect and thank her for making this manga that made me laugh...but mostly cry lol. UR AWESOME MISS YAZAWA <3 :D

@ShonenNekoTakaya ... But so much still needs closure, I don't ask for happy fairytale-ending (though that would be nice), just.. a proper one. The title of the manga is 'NANA' and there're two Nana's, two stories linked together. I don't know.. it did go on hiatus at ch. 77, the ch. where Ren dies.. Aaargh, it's just wrong to end an amazing manga like that! But you're probably right, it was her way of ending it, without ending it, perhaps due to her illness. Really frustrating.

@JinnoBby It is something you can't really explain to people unless they've seen it. All of the characters are very easy to relate to. In some ways, Ren's death is the end of Nana. Nothing can be the same after he's gone. I think Ai Yazawa's heart broke when she wrote his death.

@ShonenNekoTakaya Yeah, I really hate it when I fall in love with an anime/manga which ended without closure or went on hiatus. Even though the story is set in a world which is faaar away from mine, the values and the feelings they feel, everything is so real. You come to love the characters, hate with them, cry with them, laugh with them. I seriously need more!
