In front of a black curtain strung across a square of packed earth, about a dozen young Ugandan children dance -- the rhythm of their movements bringing smiles to their faces. The Bitone Children's Center in Kampala, Uganda, supported in part by a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant through the Rotary clubs of Kampala East, Uganda, and Traverse Bay Sunrise, Michigan, USA, is home to two dozen children, between the ages of 8 and 18, many of whom are orphans who have lost their homes or been estranged from their families by disease, war, or economic hardship. The word "bitone" means "talents." By helping disadvantaged children explore their rich heritage and then teaching them the skills to share that heritage with others, Bitone hopes to build the childrens self-esteem, help them become self-reliant, and give them a chance to create a peaceful future for others.
