I think the word you're looking for is 'choked'. The Man Utd players couldn't handle the pressure of the occasion and choked it :-)
The only reason Man Utd won the EC in 1968 was because they played a load of minor teams no one has even heard of!

Sadly that will never happen in the premier league, because most games are fixed and managers receive backhanders from Alex Ferguson.
