Sarla sings Piya Aiso Jiya Mein Samai Gayo Re from the film Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam . Originally sung by beautiful Bengali singer Geeta Duttji. Stars tragedy queen Meena Kumariji, emotional actor/ director Guru Duttji & Rehman. Music Director the great Hemant Kumar. Meenaji with the most beautiful eyes acts this song with so many brilliant facial expressions that she does full justice to Geetaji's melodious, husky voice. According to me Meenaji was the pure soul and purity showed on her face. You must read her autobiogrphy by Ashok Mehta, which I read in the 80's and was really impressed to know her as a person. All the money that Meena Kumari earned went to her parents before she was married and later the money went to her husband. When she passed away she was penniless and the hospital bills were paid by fellow film stars. She died in the hospital behind my mother's home at Walkeshwar in Bombay. Meena and Geeta both had very similar lives,
Towards the end of their careers, Geeta Duttji turned to acting to earn more money as her career had slid and she had taken to drinking. Similarly Meenaji at that stage of her career had taken up writing and reciting poetry. She too had taken to drinking. But both were always thirsty for love and living lives for others. Two days before Meenaji passed away I had a dream and a clip of the film Mere Apne came in my dreams where Meenaji is lying motionless on the floor.
I dedicate this song to Mitzi and Pashambay for their birthdays on October 5th and October 10th.
