This is a beaut yirdaki made by Dopiya Yunupingu, who is the wife of famed yirdaki maker Djalu Gurruwiwi. Dopiya is more than competent as a yirdaki maker... she accompanies Djalu frequently when he goes out bush to cut yirdaki and has been known to have cut and made her fair share of great instruments over the years, as well as being one of the primary painters of Djalu's instruments.

This clip shows Larry Winiwini, Dopiya's (and Djalu's) son, playing the yirdaki.

The instrument has a wonderfully clear overtone note that is very pure. It rings with clarity and has a warm and soft quality to its tone. The voice is best described as thunderous, which is a characteristic valued by Djalu and the Galpu in general.

This yirdaki is available in the iDIDJ Store as our promotional bargain of the week :-)

  • It's excellent to see Yolngu getting exposure through YouTube- a sincerely democratic endeavor, methinks

  • I couldn't agree more! Next thing would be for Yolngu to make their own films and docos... some communities already have their own video cameras and other equipment and are training to learn to use these technologies!

  • @sonofthedestroyer interdimensional shift?

  • @bigbangerbison,

Its not possible to know at this time. Because Europeans have lied about the true history of the world to the point where everything is confused. But truth will come out when interdimensional shift is complete

  • in 1 way it is great to see aboriginal or native people having success in modern culture. but the more they do it the more they are being separated from there own culture witch is slowly but surely fading away in this government controlled word. black or brown and white we are losing touch with our roots and our real connection with earth. only to replaced by by man made reality( money, school, tv , fashion ect..

  • hi off topic but do the aboriginal people come from afirca
