NEW DELHI: For prominent citizens and leading industrialists of Delhi, voting was easy. But a certain section of society it has not been so easy. About 1300 commercial sex workers voted for the first time in Delhi, thanks to the efforts of the NGO - Bharatia Patita Udhar Sabha. Their first wish after getting the card and voting is that they will now get school admission for kids, open a bank account and can proudly apply for home loans.
About 4500 such workers live in the Delhis red-light area of GB Road, and had been fighting for more than a decade to get a voter ID card.
Commercial sex worker Nasreen Begum said, This card is very important. It helps you to open a bank account. It also helps in school admissions. Without this card there was always a sense of fear. We didnt have any identity.
The middlemen did not want them to be registered with the government and local police did not want an official acknowledgement of their existence. But now they can hope to live a more normal life.
Commercial sex worker Meena said: We just want an account. The police should stop taking advantage. Thats why we wanted this voter ID card. This is the first time I voted even though I have been living in Delhi for the past 10 years.
Commercial sex workers have been waiting for this day - their chance to vote for the first time. These elections have been far more inclusive this time - from prominent citizens to those who havent got a fair deal from society all have exercised their right to choose their leaders.
