That's not true, she was not terribly ill, she was hooked up on barbiturates and amphetamines, on this presentation she had a mild heart attack and she didn't even noticed, she thought she was just "out of breath" and kept on going with the show, that night she had a full heart attack and died. She had no clue her heart was that weakened.

She had a mild heart attack during this number when her and Durante were doing that fast bit and she went down to one knee and then stood up again, that was when it happened. You could tell to because she was all out of breath and puffing like a freight train. When she went home, later that evening she had a second heart attack, only this one was massive and it killed her. I still find it awe inspiring that she got up and finished the number like nothing was wrong.

Wow...gotta give Durante credit, boy....almost at the exact moment he saw Miranda was have a problem he pulled up and without even missing a beat improvised a segueway right into something else with the audience being none the wiser. That's the vaudeville training coming into play.

Wow. People of my generation only knew Jimmy Durante as an old comedian from a long time past (I was born in 1960). But his rapid fire response to something obviously and tragically totally unscripted (he knew something was seriously wrong before Carmen Miranda hit the floor, and managed to pull a one-liner reference to a line from the Xavier Cugat song 'South America, Take It Away' out of his hat to boot) offers a split second look at his comedic genius.
