This is a video comparing the boot time and subsequent launching of InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop CS3 on my internal HD and an external OWC FW800 SSD. The SSD is on the left, the stock HD is on the right. This iMac is from 2007, so I'm guessing the internal HD is not nearly as peppy as it once was, but I wanted to see if I could get another year out of it before buying a new iMac. I had thought about replacing the internal drive with the SSD, but it just wasn't worth the risk/effort to me. I'm well aware that an SSD's peak throughput is far above that of a FW800 connection, but I figured the random read speed would still provide significant benefit. Needless to say, I'm happy with the results.
Wow, looks like YouTube borked the speed of the video upon upload …oh well, I like it. Much more entertaining.
In case it's not clear, the SSD booted the iMac and launched all three CS3 apps in 51 seconds (so nice I played it twice). The internal HD took just under 5 minutes.
