Ruby has learned some easy tricks; maybe she can teach me to make a movie of them.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. It has been a year since Ruby died, and I still miss her terribly. All we can do is be glad for the time they were with us, and that they are not suffering now.

  • I am very sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, you are not alone. I know of many needless deaths from untreated Fanconi; many vets are totally unaware of it.

Every basenji owner should strip test his basenji at least once every month for his entire life with Bayer Diastix or Clinistix for Glucose. A positive result and further testing that indicates Fanconi is not a death sentence; Fanconi can be managed with Dr. Steve Gonto's Fanconi protocol.

  • I know LOTS of people who live in a city with their basenji(s)! The dog has the same requirements no matter where he lives: good food, regular dental attention, lots of fresh air and exercise, and plenty of love. :)

  • Don't be sad. Ruby LOVED doing tricks. She was very smart and always happy to be engaged. She learned to differentiate between certain toys, enjoyed figuring out how to get whatever she wanted, and no force was ever used. She was independent - when she wanted to be. :)

  • Very nice and adorable too! I bet that took a long time to get him to that stage. Them dogs are soo cute. I am thinking about getting a Basenji, but it will have to be shipped to me =( and i dont like to do that. Where did you get yours?

  • Please DO NOT get your basenji from a website unless the seller screens you to make sure that YOU are suited to the breed. Responsible breeders want their dogs to go to homes that will keep them safe. Look for a breeder referral on the Basenji Club of America website, or look at the Basenji Rescue and Transport website for a rescue.

to skip crawling and walk to the cookie

    is not cheating but smart.

  • I have a Basenji-Pug mix, she's a year old :) She's a little turd, but we love her.. she's orange except for a little light orange on her tummy and butt, and her muzzle fades into black. She's built exactly like a basenji. Her skin is a little bit loose around her, due to the wrinkly nature of pugs. Her tail is kind of a mystery, it's mostly straight except for a slight curl at the end. I think her mouth is more like a pug's would be if it had a long muzzle. I don't know why I put this.. hmm.

  • I wish animals could live as long as us Ive lost a cat of old age and a kitten because of a snake also a dog we had for a day we found him and unticked him also Ill loose my grandmother soon stroke :( Bro 2

  • @Neverbark1 that bell thing you taught her is genius =p and im sorry to hear that your Ruby died =[ she looked like one hell of a dog.

  • My Basenji just pass away this last Monday... just can't stop watching this since I found this video, I congratulate to you, I haven't the opportunity to training her because I got her when she was 6 months and she was really rebel, Oh...how I miss Her!!!

  • @loijsan you absolutely don't have any knowledge of the Basenji do you?

My uncle has had 4 of them, and they LOVE to learn, they just have trouble concentrating, because they are very cat-like.

But you can teach them anything, you just have to be patient with them, and believe me, they DO want to learn tricks. And they are extremely smart, their intellegence is underestimated because they have problems staying focused. But that doesn't mean they're dumb and don't want to learn.

  • Any potential basenji owner MUST learn to deal with the breed first. My best friend in the world died because my vet and I were not educated on fanconi syndrome.

His disease made him extremely temperamental and he bit people to the point we almost had to put him down 2x. The vet said he had a hypoactive thyroid and put him on pointless meds, which made him sicker.

Besides that, they have a personality that left unfulfilled, can make them seem aggressive when all they want to do is learn.

  • I am considering having a Basenji, I fell in love with them.. I do have one question though; Are they really suitable for city-living? I live in Amsterdam, near a park, and I have enough time on my hands to have long walks and work with them of course, but would they thrive in a city?
