I can assure you after seeing Dave several times in recent years, that he remains a very thoughtful, inventive, imaginative and fiery improvisor!

Dave used to blow the roof off of Carnegie Hall (I heard him do it with Blakey's Messengers, and M. Brecker was on the same program). He was a flame-thrower back then (check out any of the 4 LPs he made for Muse). He dropped out of the scene for at least 20 years when all we heard was the Marsalises. He's a completely different player now--deliberate and thoughtful, and why not? This tune inspired "Giant Steps," and Dave is a giant with nothing to prove.

Way back when ,he played too many notes, now he seems to playing not enough notes, some good ones though. On this tune anyway.I know him from Gulliver's and Three Sisters, many moons ago.
