An experiment I conducted with an old computer monitor and some oval-shaped magnets. Enjoy, and as always, I would love to hear your thoughts and experiments. YoungTesla

  • If this is an old style electron gun screen, you are not actually seeing magnetic fields, but rather the impact location of electrons thrown off their normal paths by the magnet. If the screen is a modern LCD, the electric charges within them are also being disrupted from their normal paths, generating abnormal images. But magnetic fields? No. Good effect though.

  • @russiancrew5000 That is certainly true. This rule holds true in all cases for viewing any type of phenomenon. For example, our eyes do not actually "see" light directly, but rather, the rods & cones in the retina receive incoming photons and translate them into electrical impulses which are then interpreted by the brain. In this case, the magnetic field is modifying vectoral components of the stream of electrons from the CRT, allowing for us to indirectly visualize the field structure. :-)

    Try that :)

  • I wish you had just let the magnet(s) sit still, so that we could study the patterns. Then have two magnets in repulsion mode (still), and then in attraction mode (still), and turn a magnet over to see if/how the pattern changes. Spinning the magnets spoiled the video: what did that demonstrate or prove! I'd like to see the static patterns and then try and explain such patterns with forces. Hope you try it again - without the spinning.

  • It's very cool how much bigger the color "circles" became when you put both of the magnets together.

  • wow
