*On International Human Rights Day, Nationwide Actions are planned to demand
Charges Be Dropped on Human Rights Defender Alex Sanchez*
In the spirit of International Human Rights Day, We Are Alex chapters in Los
Angeles, New York City and Washington D.C. will hold coordinated press
events/actions to call for the freedom of human rights defender Alex
Sanchez, who has been held in federal prison since June 2009. *In New York
City, groups will gather directly across from the United Nations at Ralph
Bunche Park on December 10, 2009 at 2pm.*
Alex Sanchez is an internationally recognized human rights defender for his
long standing international peace work in the United States and in Central
America. As a well-respected violence prevention pioneer and expert on gang
culture and youth criminalization, Alex has advocated for comprehensive
intervention strategies, and immigration reform. The Campaign to free Alex
has garnered the support of hundreds of prominent figures, professors,
advocates, and community leaders. Alex is the recipient of many awards
including the Drum Major Award from the Martin Luther King Legacy
Association, the Lottie Wexler Award, the AGAPE Award and others. He is a
proud husband and father and symbol of peace, compassion and courage to his
family, friends and community. The nation wide coalition is comprised of
dozens of organizations and prominent supporters such as former California
Senator Tom Hayden. Speakers at the New York press conference included
executive director Janis Rosheuvel from Families for Freedom, executive
director Sergio Argueta from STRONG Youth from Long Island, professors from
New York University and John Jay College for Criminal Justice, and
journalist and immigrant rights advocate Roberto Lovato.
