UPDATE:
I will be getting my larger tank very soon I have about $400 saved up just for the tank and I am trying to decide how big I want to go.

p.s. the Albino Zebra (AKA. Pink Floyd is doing very well and has grown at least a 1/4 inch since I got him a month ago much faster than the Labidochromis caeruleus are growing.
--
These are the first Cichlids I have owned.
I am looking to get a bigger tank soon, but as big as these guys currently are a 20 gallon is big enough for now!

These electric yellows I have are both under two inches long and its only a temperary tank till i get my aquarium room setup.

The guy at petco told me that a 20 gallon was big enough for the three fish I bought (two electric yellows & one Albino Zebra) but I had full intentions of getting a 55 gallon or bigger In the future!

How fast do these Cichlids Grow Anyway?

Setup:
A Marineland H.O.T. 250 Power Filter that I clean every two weeks along with a 50% water swap!

Custom Hood with 2 CFL bulbs equal to the light output of a 45 watt light bulb on high or a 15 watt bulb on low

  • A 20g is good for now but I'd move up as soon as you can. I still need to move up from my 36g, as my Labs and Orange Zebras a growing quick. They are a lot bigger from the video I have posted up. If you keep doing those 50% water changes you'll notice a big difference in their size week by week. But wait until you put them in a 55g, they'll be growing even quicker! It's cool to see them get bigger and their black stripes and egg spots come in. Good luck!

  • This was posted over a year ago I now have them in a 55 gallon check out my other videos of some of my females holding they are taken in my 55g

  • 50 percent water swap isnt that healthy for the tank... a weekly 10~15 % water change is way better.. (a 50 % swap will most likely hinder the beneficial bacteria from establishing...)

  • I know but that was because I had so many fish in such a small tank now that I have my 55 Gallon up and running I do a 20% water change every two weeks and it has been fine like that for months now.

  • Nice one too. But just so you know, electric yellows and albinos take so long to grow big compared to the blus cichlids. I bought my yellow, blue and albino together but the blue is now way bigger than the two.....

  • thanks for the info as I said this is my first Cichlid tank so I am new to the cichlid game and have nothing to base my questions on (short of tetras, danios, Guppy's and bettas I have owned in the past)

These are really the first "aggressive" fish that I have every owned!

  • How is your tank doing? Its looks good there but that's over a year ago. I have some cichlid videos posted. Is there any pointers you could give me. My Electric Yellow seems to be getting more aggressive.

  • does anyone want to buy two 10" albino oscars

  • i seel my tank for 120 000 dll

    is about 500 gallons

  • Nice start! Are those live plants? Dont your cichlids eat them?

Plants may also lower your Ph level which you better keep high for Africans.

  • i just wanted to say i have to disagree with the time it takes for the yellow guys to grow. i have one myself. had it for less than a year now. i have in a 55 gallon corner tank now because of how fast he has grown. i got it as a baby about 4 months after i had my jack dempsey. the electric yellow cichlid is now 2 and a half times the size of my jack. when i got him he was less than half the size of "jack" plus i think now hes in that angry teenager state of mind.
