Synthetic phonics is a method for teaching reading. Pupils are taught how the letters we see are code for sounds we hear and how to blend (synthesise) the sounds to read words (e.g. read 'dog' by blending the sounds represented by 'd' ... 'o' ... 'g'). Jolly Phonics is a commercial programme for young children based on synthetic phonics principles.
