This is coverage from WDAY-TV in Fargo of the late-season blizzard and subsequent flooding in Wahpeton, North Dakota; Breckenridge, Minnesota; and Ada, Minnesota during April 5-8, 1997.

This video came from the "Floodwatch '97" video sold by WDAY-TV in 1997 to benefit flood victims.
The night the power went out in Grand Forks, ND because of the Ice Storm/Blizzard is the night the dikes failed in Wahpeton, ND and Breckenridge, MN. I remember listening to KFGO 790 AM out of Fargo (all our radio stations were off the air) in the dark and I felt so powerless (no pun intended) and scared. The winter of 1996-97 definitely changed how I looked at things.

I remember this as I was with the Coast Guard (DRU-2) in Breckinridge area when we transfered seniors out of the assisted living in Breckinridge, I gave many people boat rides back to thier homes to retrive pets and items left behind.

I would never want to go through something like this. Hurricanes are bad enough (FL).
I honestly think floods are worse.

I live 100 miles south of Fargo on the MN side. I was 15 at the time of this flood. I helped sand bag then, helped sand bag last year. never thought back then it would get that bad again.

This is becoming a reality again. It has snowed a lot here in Winnipeg over the past 2 days, and from what people say, it's already 2 feet above 1997's level.

I was 2 when this happened in Fargo. I lived only about a mile from the Red River near the border of West fargo and the worst thing that happened to us was when the river started flowing through the cul-de-sac we lived in. Pretty lucky. I'm in Alexandria MN now and am wondering what's going to happen with this new storm.

I was 6. But now I'm 18, and we're trying to deal with this again.
