http://www.freescale.com/smartenergy - Freescale's Bruno Baylac, director of marketing for Freescale's worldwide industrial segment, demonstrates the home energy management system that shows how Freescale technology can significantly help to reduce energy consumption and cost. The key element, the smart meter, is built around Freescale's EM256-generation microcontroller, which is specifically optimized for the smart metering market. It is also a "connected meter" -- Freescale's ZigBee platform-in-package connects the meter with the main utility and the appliances inside the home.
Inside the home, Bruno demonstrates the home energy gateway, which is built using the Freescale ARM based i.MX25 applications processor. The gateway includes a control panel combining connectivity, security and a user graphic interface. A few features include a sophisticated thermostat connected to the grid, which gives real-time information on electricity consumption and costs. This system allow consumers to program all of their key appliances and takes in information coming from the utility company to optimize cost.
