It's a Japanese condiment. Also known as rice wine. It's not fish sauce, lol. Fish sauce is darker and thicker.

It's fish sauce. You can probably find it around the soy in a supermarket. Smells really frickin' strong, but it adds a nice taste.

If you are vegetarian, just use dried seaweed for soup. It still has lots of flavor. Put the dried seaweed from cold water, leave for 10 min. and turn on the heat at low. When it comes to boil, take the seaweed out. You can cook anything in the soup. Put the bean paste at the very end after you turn off the heat.
