Part 1/2. Over the weekend of the 23rd, 24th and 25th September 2011, the Mid Norfolk Railway held it's annual 'Autumn Diesel Gala'. This years event was entitled Heavy Haul. This video takes a look at some of the action from the first day of the event, the 23rd September 2011.

Visiting locomotives included Class 56 No. 56302 (visiting from Barrow Hill Roundhouse). From the home fleet, Class 37's No's 37003 and 37219 'Shirley Ann Smith' , Class 31's No's 31235 and 31438 and Class 50 No. 50019 'Ramillies'. Locations featured include Wymondham Abbey Station, Kimberley Station and Danemoor Bank.

We first start at Wymondham Abbey Station with various shots taken around this location. In order of appearance the first working of the day feautures No. 37003 top n' tailing with No's 31438 and 31235 heading from Wymondham Abbey Station leaving and heading towards the run round loop to the south of the station. We then catch another shot of the trio leaving the loop to head back into the station, before finally seeing the train departing the station heading towards Kimberley Station. Watch for the clag from the 31's as they depart in this shot. We then move to a public footcrossing between Wymondham and Kimberley where we see No. 56302 with a working for Wymondham Abbey, before seeing the same working return heading the opposite direction. Back to Wymondham Abbey Station, and No's 37219 'Shirley Ann Smith' and 37003 are seen double heading the next working into the station, before heading towards the run round loop. The pair are then seen running round the train, before we move to the platform to see the train head into the station. Moving to Kimberley Station, No's 37219 'Shirley Ann Smith' and 37003 are again seen on the same service heading through the station towards Thuxton. On Kimberley Station platform, No's 31438 and 31235 are seen double heading a working for Wymondham Abbey. We then see the pair attacking the 1 in 141 Danemoor Bank heading out of Kimberley Station heading towards Thuxton. In the opposite direction No's 37219 'Shirley Ann Smith' and 37003 are seen top n' tailing with No. 50019 'Ramillies'. We then see the trio returning up the bank with No. 50019 'Ramillies' providing the power this time. No's 31438 and 31235 are seen double heading the next working towards Wymondham Abbey with No. 56302 on the rear. No. 56302 is then seen returning at the same location working in the opposite direction. The final shot see No. 37219 'Shirley Ann Smith' working alone heading past Kimberley Station heading towards Wymondham Abbey Station.

The main highlights of the day were the double heading of the two Class 37's and the two Class 31's. Also this event was Class 31 No. 31235's first run for over two years and Class 37 No. 37219 'Shirley Ann Smith' and Class 31 No. 31438's last run's before leaving.

*Thanks to cmeonthemove (Chris) for showing me some great locations along the MNR. It was great to spend the day with him. Check out his video from this day of the gala.*

  • @cmeonthemove Yes likewise, was great to spend the day again with you. Very much looking forward to seeing you at the NVR diesel gala - will make the day more interesting not being on my own (as I usually am). The traffic was bad when I left, but I managed to escape the worst of it! Gotta love the clag those 31's were giving off - it was spectacular! Hope a couple more loco's will take their place when the 31 and 37 go.

  • Great to see you on Friday and good that you got home safe. Hope the traffic wasn't too bad as just after we left the travel news reported the usual jams on the A11 just after Thetford! The clag from the 31s was unbelievable! Such a shame we're losing 31438 and 37219. See you at the NVR.

  • @NapierNimbus Thanks Ian, it was quite amazing - they were still clagging well during the middle of the day!

  • Good shots and audio - amazing clag pool left by the 31s
