@meyermaggot the vapor from mace is quite potent, too... as the father (I'm only guessing the sprayer's role as father) suggested by the "ooh, I can taste it" comment. Having been hit by mace through a shemagh and having been hit by mace with a gas mask... I can tell you that there is a HUGE difference.

GAS masks are usually tested with chemical agents in GAS form. anything can stop liquid mace from hitting you.
