For my part, I recognize that this is a local story, but I wish that our western media would release pieces such as this more prominently. Perhaps americans would then put more pressure on our leadership for legitimate dialogue.

There is a double standard applied to the american people. When middle eastern nations are discussed, the leaders are at fault. But when america is discussed, the people are accused. Please understand that the american political system and media is far more complicated than is recognized abroad. it is doubtful that it is representative of most americans. Like most, we simply want to provide for our families and improve our lot in life.

.."I don't know much about Pinochet"..ill informed, tutututututu. Then in that case your not really fit to be passing judgment.

The truth is, most Muslim countries would prefer the Iranian nuke to the Israeli nuke, end of story. And the Sunni/Shiite divide isn't as big as your trying to make out, 1in6 Muslims are Shiite. Muslim all believe in the same foundations, so please cut the crap.
-
Do you think the choice of the people would be to have a despotic government?
I am sort of muslim myself, more like Turkish sunni muslim. I think the Turks and the Tatars tolerate the shiites more than most sunnis in the world. The shiites are a small minority of Islam, and believe in things most muslims scoff at. I don't think the Sunni Islamic world would allow Shiite Iran to dominate.

I think we are closer to agreement than not.
I don't know much about Pinochet. I think the American media portrayed him as a bad guy for a long time. What was the alternative to Pinochet at the beginning. America always backed the most likely successful candidate. who was NOT communist, in the 50s 60s 70s 80s 90s and to this very day I think..

Iran may support the Palestinian authority, it is allowed to do support a democratically elected government.the Lebanese parliament is the biggest joke of a democracy you can come across. Saudi and Egypt may want to feather the ayatollahs, but their just puppet regimes propped up by the US and Britain, and not the choice of the people.

Im afraid the picture isn't as rosy as you think. I wouldn't have had a problem if American meddling in other countries was souly for the people benefit. But most the time the intervention serves as booster to American interests, and not the other countries interest. ....which part of Augusto Pinochet, was a benefit to the the Chilean people.

Which part of America's drive for survival and willingness to intervene on behalf of the world's people, at great cost to America in terms of life and treasure, don't you understand? Who else could do it? If you prefer tyranny, despotism, dictatorships over freedom and democracy, that is your right. America thinks most people of the world would prefer freedom and liberty and peace.
"Which of thy Lord's blessings would you deny?"

The world is very small now. Hadn't you noticed?
Iran meddles (tries to influence) Syria, Iraq, Palestine through the use of Hizbollah and Hamas. There are few countries in the world with the resources or the will to help people like the United States has been able and willing to do. This will probably come to an end soon, as the US is now in decline. Rejoice, you will win ultimately, but what you win will be much less than what you could have had.
The Iranian people use every oppurtinity to protest agains this regime, the fule rationing just a couple months ago but unfortunately due to the strestfull and busy life in iran where 40 percent of poeple are below poverty range but dispite all these issue the youth generation specially the acedemic levels are the most inteactuall and the bravest in iran and the ones who would make a different in iran some day.
