Prince William has been given the adulation of a rock star at The Block, in inner-Sydney Redfern, where he's meeting with members of the indigenous community.

The young prince was welcomed with a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony at Redfern Community Centre, where up to two thousand well wishers looked on.

One woman, Barbara Selby, brought a large photo of the late Princess Diana meeting her daughter and grandson, when she was in Sydney in 1997 to open the Victor Chang building at St Vincent's Hospital.

Prince William gave the crowd a brief wave when the ceremony was over, and was ushered inside the community centre, where he'll meet with elders and children.

Earlier the Prince had flown from New Zealand with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. On landing in Sydney he was immediately taken to lunch with the Governor-General.
