The F-35C carrier variant completes its first catapult launch on July 27 at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. Navy test pilot Lt. Chris Tabert flew the mission in test aircraft CF-3.
@Antifaith29 You are correct about the F-35 not being 100% stealth. Stealth is directional, and even the F-117 was very stealthy from the front and rear, but only somewhat stealth from the side.
F-35, PAK-FA, and Chinese J-20 are all unsealthy from the rear with their round engine nozzles. Round is a horrible shape for stealth (there is always a bit that is flat on to reflect radar back at all angles).
F-35 is a compromise, and stealthy from head on only.
@weirdguy564 Interestingly enough, the F35 isnt classified as stealth anymore either. I do agree with your points however, something new is definatley need something new.
For a sorce on the stealth thing i used wiki so its not 100% reliable but from what ive read they downgraded from very low observable to low observable, a radar cross section from a marble to a beachball. Still low observ yes but no more than say the Rafale.
@Antifaith29 Harriers are not stealth. Or supersonic. Or easy to fly. Or lower maintenance due to being new.
Guys, old planes are worn out. Just like your car, you have to get a new one sooner or later, and you don't buy the same thing you just had do you? If that were not true, then we would all be driving our grandparents model T.
@Antifaith29 Your right, the Harrier is a safe reliable aircraft for long duration flights at sea. I'm sure it's crash record would reflect this. I don't mind your comment but why try to be a smart mouth when arguing against an extremely logical point?

@TheMMUW They're wider, but not longer. The wings are extended out a bit, but also has a joint in it so the wingtips fold up.
