Patagona gigas. Spotted on tobacco flowers next to Lake Huacarpay, near Cusco, Peru.

  • Yes, they're that big! ;-) They are over 20 cms long and at the extreme edge of how large hummingbirds can get. Saying that though (and like a lot of hummingbirds), that measurement includes a lot of beak! I don't think tobacco flowers/nectar have anything really special going for them, but I guess they pretty much blooming all the time and are a reliable food source in an otherwise cold and sparse mountain environment.
