Kirk and I camped and hiked Saturday through Sunday at Pinnacles National Monument. Despite a light rain all Saturday, we came prepared and the trip went great. Saturday we spent hiking from the Old Pinnacles trailhead to the Balconies Caves - the stream overflowed across the trail many times, but we had a good time crossing it. Balconies caves were flooded out and we returned via High Peaks. On Sunday, we reached our goal of hiking to North and South Chalone Peaks - 3304ft and 3269ft respectively. North and especially South Chalone peak had decent snow cover which you can see in the video. We also passed through the Bear Gulch Caves on the ways in and out - having to remove our shoes to make it through the water (couldn't go all day with wet boots). That night we camped again at site 29. Overnight it dropped below freezing as evidenced by the thick frost covering everything. Monday morning we did a short hike up the Bear Gulch Trail to the Overlook - about 2 miles and bringing our three day trip mileage total to over 22 miles of hiking! Great weekend.
It was cold for sure! But a nice fire followed by a night in a mountain hardware tent and a 10 degree REI mummy bag does the trick!
