Chomsky is pretty popular in the US, too - among people who've heard of him. And Chomskyan is right that his political and linguistic work have been banned in Stalinist states. When he was in Cuba a few years ago he publicly criticized Castro to his face and Castro sat there and took it.

As far as having "excessively unrealistic liberal ideals," that's just a generic critique from people who supports status quo, or reactionaries, and disconnected from historical trends. What was considered "unrealistic" in a particular period is constantly shifting with changes in society, usually with people actively pursuing "unrealistic" goals.
And I am not sure what "intrusive cultural arrogance" means, can you explain with some examples?
-
Completely untrue. Because of his anti-Leninist stance, even his linguistics work was kept out in the state socialist countries. This should be clear if ever bothered to actually read anything he has written.

Generally speaking, I like Chomsky. But I thought his stance against American allies such as South Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea during the Cold War is somewhat disturbing.
Essentially, there is a bit of excessively unrealistic liberal ideal and intrusive cultural arrogance there.

yup, especialy north korea, china, and cuba
Why was it disturbing? Because he exposed the connections between US imperialism and their client states? In fact his stance is not "against" any of the US allies, but to illustrate the imperial reach of the US, and how the US population can and should respond.
Even with his harsh critique of the Israeli state policies in the Occupied Territories, he ALWAYS trace it back to US interests, since "we are responsible for what we do, and what we can affect." Which part of this is disturbing?
