Finally Someone Says This (Al Gore)

Al Gore in part of the best speech he's ever given (and I hope one he really meant) saying what is rarely said about the threat America currently faces.

I would argue we have something very important to deal with today (but nothing to fear, and nothing to give up freedom for, and as Al says, much less of a threat than we've faced in our past - until US authoritarians succeed in expanding that threat to be historically greater, that is...), i.e. stopping these authoritarians (in our country) that are using terrorism to grow their own power... this is a threat that is greater than from terrorist organizations themselves, because authoritarians in charge of our security (in our government & some companies) are using terrorist attacks to move the US from democracy towards totalitarian government. That conflict of interest must be dealt with or else terrorists & those that want to lessen freedom here in the US will both win (they both independently have the same goal and are using each other to achieve it).

The danger is not present, but it is imminent. Al Gore makes an interesting point (rarity!), but during those wars he talked about, we knew who the enemy was. The enemy flew certain colors and wore certain uniforms. The objectives were also clear, and that was simply to establish dominance over the opposition.
