This narration is from Ibn Abi al-Dunya:

Abu Mu'allaq (ra) was a pious Companion of the Prophet (saw). Once, he was approached by an armed robber who demanded: "Give me what you've got! I'm going to kill you! As for your money, it is mine, and all I want now is your blood!" Abu Mu'allaq replied: "If you insist, then let me pray." He said: "Pray as much as you want." So he did wudoo and prayed 4 rak'ahs, and during the final sajdah he made the following dua 3 times: "O Most Loving, O Most Loving, O Owner of the Majestic Throne, O Initiator, O Returner, O You Who do whatever You will, I ask You by the Light of Your Countenance which fills the Pillars of Your Throne, and I ask You by Your Power by which You control all of Your creation, and I ask You by Your Mercy which encompasses all things. There is no god but You, O Helper help me!" Suddenly, he saw a horseman charging towards the thief with a spear, thus stabbing him fatally. The horseman then turned to Abu Mu'allaq and said: "Get up!" He replied: "Who are you? Allah has helped me by you today." He said: "I am an Angel from the 4th heaven. When you said your dua the first time, I heard the gates of heaven tremble, then when you said your dua the 2nd time I heard a noise from the people of heaven, then when you said your dua the 3rd time it was said to me: 'The dua of one who is in distress,' and I asked Allah to let me kill the thief.'"

Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: So you should know that whoever does wudoo' and prays four rak'ahs and recites this dua, will receive an answer, whether he is in distress or not.
