Il più grande successo di Elvis Costello and The Attractions, datato 1979.
I critici musicali pensavano che la canzone fosse ispirata a Oliver Cromwell, fondatore di un esercito precursore di quello inglese moderno . Costello stesso dichiarò che aveva visto nel 1978 a Belfast ragazzi in tenuta da combattimento con armi automatiche e l'amara conclusione cui allude è che sono proprio i giovani della classe operaia che vengono mandati a morire. La canzone fa riferimento anche a tutte alle aree di criticità del mondo di quel periodo, quali la Palestina, il Sud Africa (purtroppo non c'è niente di nuovo, dopo oltre 30 la Storia è sempre la stessa). Qualcuno la considerava un inno contro l'occupazione di Belfast. Comunque questa canzone molto bella e di grande successo stava per essere scartato dall'album "Armed Forces" e fu la genialità del tastierista Steve Nieve che creando la parte di pianoforte, a sua volta ispirata a "Dancing Queen" degli Abba, trasformò il brano in un evergreen.
