Don McLean - Everybody loves me :-)

Fortune has me well in hand, armies 'wait my command
My gold lies in a foreign land buried deep beneath the sand
The angels guide my ev'ry tread, my enemies are sick or dead
But all the victories I've led haven't brought you to my bed

CHORUS:
You see, everybody loves me, baby, what's the matter with you?
Won'tcha tell me what did I do to offend you?

Now the purest race I've bred to be to live in my democracy
And the highest human pedigree awaits the first-born boy baby
And my face on ev'ry coin engraved, the anarchists are all enslaved
My own flag is forever waved by the grateful people I have saved

CHORUS

Now, no man is beyond my claim when land is seized in the people's name
By evil men who rob and maim, if war is hell, I'm not to blame!
Why, you can't blame me, I'm Heaven's child, I'm the second son of Mary mild
And I'm twice removed from Oscar Wilde, but he didn't mind, why, he just smiled

Yes, and the ocean parts when I walk through, and the clouds dissolve and the sky turns blue
I'm held in very great value by everyone I meet but you
'cause I've used my talents as I could, I've done some bad, I've done some good
I did a whole lot better than they thought I would so, c'mon and treat me like you should!

  • Cats make everything better. Even this song, which was perfect without the cat, so now it's better then perfect. If you can even imagine it....

  • Yer kitty makes it alot better, when you listen to it looking it the cat, it kinda makes me think that the cat is singing the song.

  • The cat should bathe in the tub because the sink ain't big enough for 'im.

  • @schwing1957 You've so over simplified it, it's actually a satire. Read mllemona1967's comment to understand.

  • I always loved this song. I think it's just hyperbole by a guy who doesn't understand why a girl doesn't dig him - he's a good guy (in his own opinion).

  • This is patently about the United States. This song came out in 1971 on the album American Pie, when the US was, among other things, embroiled in a long running and bitterly divisive war in Vietnam.

  • @starryeyedocean I agree, it sounds like this person is extremely egocentric. XD

  • And I've fallen in love with the fat cat, the perfect cat for this perfectly funny song.

  • Now that I've listened to this song some 20 times, I think it's not about anyone in particular. He's singing like he's drunk or just having fun and yet his lyrics are designed to make us think. So clever, Don McLean. You truly are the master of poetic songs with riddles!

  • I AGREE! The cat in the sink is just perfect. I had some McLean records in my collection in high school, was very into solo artists, but the pressing was bad and all the songs sounded really bass-.y. This song was on that record. I like the brighter, clearer sound on this video. Love this song! Can still remember laughing the first time I played it...

  • I've never heard this song before until a few days ago. It's fun to listen to and to watch even though someone's fat cat is all there is. I think the song is about some past presidents, particularly JFK, LBJ and RN who was in a scandal by then I think.
