A Jamieson Note: Mannie Klein at trumphet. Ziggy passed. Martha Tilton at vocals. "You smile and the angels sing...although it's just a murmur at the start." Please Refer to: Judith Durham's "Far Shore".
With heartfelt love for adventure and the sound of lover's in love,
Jamieson (Peter)

Fine Song Martha!
Aloha from Hawaii!

One of the greatest trumpet solos ever, hands down!

@olbrneyes - In fact the producers tried to reunite the legendary Goodman trumpet section for this scene. Harry James was available, but Chris Griffin was working steadily as a lead trumpeter in NYC and couldn't take weeks off to fly to Hollywood for the filming. (Griffin played the soaring trumpet solo on Jackie Gleason's opening theme and had to be there each week for the live broadcast). And as you say, Ziggy Elman was in poor health and could no longer play his solo on this tune.

An interesting side bar. Although Ziggy Elman is on camera appearing to play his solo, the trumpet solo was actually played by Mannie Klein. At this point in Ziggy's life, his health was failing, and he could no longer play the trumpet. When Benny Goodman went into the Capitol studio later that year to record "Mr Benny Goodman" after Martha Tilton sang her vocal on the album, the trumpet solo was played by Harry James.

Martha Tilton was a talented singer and a real lady. She autographed a still from this film and it had Gene Krupa in the background. She commented how much she loved and admired Gene's playing. Such a kind lady and very missed.

Never saw the movie but was this Martha Tilton’s only scene in it? If so, it’s even more disappointing that they cut so much of the lyric.

I really love her voice...
Its too bad they couldn't have had her doing a whole song. Maybe it should have been Loch Lomond to be more true to the fact?
Thanks for posting this beautiful scene.

Not only was the song an "anachronism" here (A full year before it was composed, Benny supposedly performs it at Carnegie Hall? Such is Hollywood), Ziggy Elman isn't even playing on the soundtrack! When it was recorded for the film in August 1955, Elman was unable to participate in the session {some say it was due to a "busted lip"; others claimed he could no longer play the solo as he did, 16 years before}- Manny Klein "impersonated" Elman's solo while Ziggy "performed" it on screen.
