Katie Smith, an olympic basketball gold medalist and member of this year's USA team for the 2008 Beijing Olympics Basketball tournament, works out while Dave Richardson, her strength and conditioning coach and a coach of the Ohio State basketball team, explains the training circuit exercises she's doing. Katie Smith plays in the regular basketball season for the Detroit Shock. The world combo rotation now we will do key strength workouts on like Monday, on a Friday, and the work capacity workout on Wednesday. The next week weÕll do work capacity, our circuit workouts on Monday and Friday, and do one string workout on Wednesday and then continue to rotate like that. You know, the philosophy is just to increase her work capacity. The timing factor is more of a competition mentality than anything else. I did one for her first workouts and timed her at 18 minutes. A couple of weeks later she did the workout over and sheÕd cut--she had cut two minutes off the workout. That is another, you know, factor too so they can see the improvement that theyÕve done. IÕm her work capacity level has improved. You can see that for the improvement on the time that sheÕs gone through the workout.
