* Please note * I don't sell anything.

Hello! It's Diana. I had a great day yesterday. My husband, son and I went to Cowell's Beach in Santa Cruz.

My husband and I took turns surfing, and, then watching our son, who was playing on the beach.

From a fibromyalgia point of view the best thing about the day was I went surfing even though I felt like total crud.

It was the second day that I'd ended up with a migraine and I was down to my very last "migraine abortive" tablet. (My insurance will only cover ten such tablets a month. They are not even painkillers or anything. Just tablets you take once a migraine starts. They dilate blood vessels or something. Vasoconstriction, I think.)

I had a whole bunch of reasons NOT to go... I had stuff on my "To Do" list I wanted to get done. I have a bum knee at the moment. I'd already worked out that day, (ridden the exercise bike 5.5 miles at the gym in the morning.)

But, I went anyway.

My husband told me afterwards he was really proud of me. He said he was totally waiting to see if I'd make some excuse and not go. But, I didn't. I went, and I put on my wetsuit gear, put on a super-duper knee brace that basically created a "bionic knee," went out in that lovely 52-degree water, and I surfed anyway. The waves were big, because there was a storm swell that had come down from the north, (this made the water even colder than usual.)

It was hard to paddle out because the waves were so strong, and the white water kept pushing me back. When I work out at the gym, I mainly do all lower body stuff because I am so afraid of aggravating my back. (Whenever I overdo it on upper body stuff, my back spasms and then my headaches get worse. I am like the world's grumpiest person when my headaches get bad.)

But, because I don't work out my upper body a lot, I don't have a lot of upper body muscle (like my husband, Mr. Muscles), for punching through the waves. After an hour, I was too tired to punch through the white water anymore.

But, I still had a really great day of surfing, and caught some really awesome waves in that hour. I guess surfing is like riding a bike. You never forget how to do it. I hadn't gone in months, because of my knee, but as soon as I stood up on my board, every part of my body knew exactly what to do. It felt really terrific. It feels like you are walking on water.

The day got even more interesting because then the cliffs above the beach caught on fire. Yes, a full on brush fire! My husband said he counted five fire engines that responded to the fire, and my son said he counted six fire engines. I couldn't tell from where I was in the water, because all I could see was flames, and a ton of black billowing smoke and ash coming at me. The surf school paddled in with their students, and left the water, but all the rest of the surfers stayed out in the water. I mean, it's not like we could burn or anything. We were in the ocean, and it's not often that you get really good storm swell waves like that. It would be a shame to miss them... I was glad when they got the fire under control, though. It was hard to take good deep breaths with all that smoke, and whenever I rode a wave all the way in to shore, I was getting hit with blowing ash. For some reason, it made me think of Pompeii.

Anyway, it was an interesting, unusual fun day.

I felt just like a normal person, (and, I think only someone with fibromyalgia understands what I mean by that...)
