Nah, I don't think George believed any of it but since it's his job to handle lunatics throughout the show he simply let it going.
It's obvious that 79% of the show revolves around ridiculous stuff but it's incredibly entertaining. Also, the rest usually touches on real and existing stuff that are interesting to hear about.
That's because coast to coast hosts are paid to listen to spooks stories with an open mind, or as Art Bell puts it "gets it".
Opening with "my name is gordon, I'm a theoretical physicist" isn't subtle to anyone besides aged spook call-in show hosts. Gotta start with details, then work your way to name dropping. It isn't subtle if you get it right away.
