Here is video of my AppleTV playing 720p and 1080p MKV files before and after installing a Broadcom CrystalHD card in place of the built-in WiFi card.

Results are mixed, with noticeable improvement with the 720p videos, and worse playback of the 1080p videos. I hope that with settings or updated drivers/libraries I can get better performance.

Here is the best guide to follow if you want to do this yourself:

  • I know your video is a year old, but the link to your guide goes to a random twitter page? Can you post the link without the url-shortener?

  • @ajayrockrock I think the blog I originally followed is no long active... I have tried searching for it and no luck. Sorry. You should do some Google searches and you will find the info on the XBMC forums, etc. Best of luck.

  • @missadvice Sorry you felt I was a "bragger"... The purpose of my video was not to demonstrate the install -- my description ALWAYS linked to the guide I used... I did not need to repeat that process... I wanted to provide something that the guide did not, video showing the before and after of the card. Understand, 8 months ago this was very new and I wanted to show the state of the XBMC build in using the CHD card... build to build it changed.

  • thanks for making this video. Very informative.

Question though. How fast does xbmc on atv boot up?

  • You can see me boot XBMC at about 4:28 in the video... I did edit out about [maybe] 10 seconds of video. It might take around 30 seconds to boot... but once you are in XBMC (or Boxee) you pretty much stay there.

You do not jump in and out.

Additionally, I am not sure if the official builds boot faster than what you see here in the video... I have been using XBMC for over 6 months and Boxee for over a year on my AppleTV and boot times have never been an issue for me. Well worth it.

  • @missadvice HEY Jew GTFO the internet cunt

  • How can you not like this video. it doesn't get much better than this. What's wrong you people?

  • will this work in Boxee beta as i prefer the the whole feel of it

  • ARM processors are primitive.

Only reason they won the mobile war is because it's a British company.

    Politics.

  • 1080 video will work correctly after you remove apple TV software totally and installing XBMC only from a patch stick ( there will be no apple tv features ) , i couldn't find the link right now , but with a bit of digging online you could find how to install XBMC only on apple , it will work cause it uses less resources than when running on apple tv native OS

  • thanks for the video. Now that its a year later & newer versions of XBMC are out, are 1080p videos now playing correctly?

  • Quick question errorik: Any updates on performances on 1080HD playback?

Also the link to the guide you have in the details, goes to a tweeter page with nothing about a guide on how to perform the install you have... could you maybe update that?

    Thanks, much appreciated!

    PS:

@missadvice who posted the "bragger" flaming attack and who didn't even bother providing a shred of helpful info or links: next time you're on a cliff, do us all a favor and jump off! ;P
