  • @standinstann:

While I'm not suggesting that this would totally deter criminals and while I certainly agree it's absurd to have the Congressmen packing heat to fire back (wow, that sounds even more ridiculous when you type it!) I would ask...

What's implicitly wrong with banning guns within 1,000 ft. of Congressmen/women?

After all, why would you WANT to have one within 1,000 ft. of a Congressperson?

It might be a silly law, but it seems harmless, unlike the airport absurdity...

  • @obiwanobiwan13 i see your point. would that be the end of the world? no, I don't think it would have much of an effect on anything, because i don't think that very many people DO carry guns within 1,000 ft of anyone. But that's kind of the point.

I have no doubt about the effectiveness of full body scanners and gun banning within X proximity of Y. I only have doubts about the wisdom and sanity of those proposals.

  • @standinstann i should say... I do actually have some doubt about the effectiveness of gun banning. An assassin or murderer doesn't care if they're banned within a certain area or not. But even if that were 100% effective, is it necessary? i don't think it is.

  • If they ban guns around congressmen, then only the criminals will have guns around congressmen.

  • Great video describing the possibilities of the unthinkable. Two years ago I was skateboarding on the sidewalk approaching an elderly man. I made sure to allow enough space for both he and I to share the sidewalk without either of us being forced to the road or boulevard. As I began to slow down to pass him he turned slightly and punched me right in the stomach. He was 84 years old and I had to get up and let it go. Do I have an uncontrollable fear of elderly people beating me up? No. I dont.

  • One of my favorite exchanges from 12 Angry Men is; "It's Possible!" "But not very Probable!".

  • People deflect the underlying issue that mental health is a factor in all these shootings. Instead of buying guns to shoot crazies why not have crazies TREATED! This guy should have been on SERIOUS MEDICATION and under SUPERVISION of a therapist and/or doctor!

  • Addition: After the gun is sold (if the store has truthfully confirmed the buyers mental health) to someone, the state gets the role of watching after the gun owner, because it has to protect its citizens. This means regular checks of that persons mental health (every half year or year) and a complete list of every gun owner and of which guns they own (of course that means, you have to register your guns).

  • One thing can actually be done to improve security not just of congressmen, but of everyone and its the No. 1 thing, that should be discussed about it in the media right now:

There need to be much more thorough regulations to ensure the sanity and mental health of people, who want to buy guns. That will cost tons of money (because you´d need to employ a lot of psyche-experts) but its indispensable. Selling guns must mean being completely responsible for who gets them.

  • It makes some sense to do something about the gun laws in Arizona, but with the stuff they're proposing, they'd be better off doing absolutely nothing, instead of wasting everyone's time.

  • @damanhl gun control laws don't lower the crime rate. It only takes guns from law-abiding citizens. Criminals break the law; therefore, gun laws don't take guns from them.
