A friend of mine had his front wheel shear off whilst cycling down a hill. the front forks did hit the ground and bent the entire frame on impact. however the results were the same, he slid forwards and then fell over sideways and off the bike

it might have worked if the bike was actually moving forward instead of slowing down. just look at how bikers do wheelies with the front wheel there needs to be forward momentum.

well in order to lift the back wheel up and leave the front wheel on the ground the bike has to be moving forward then apply the front break.

Your talking about "stoppies" not "wheelies". The technique is to stab the front brakes AND throw your weight forward over the bandlebars in order to lift the backwheel off the ground. Once in the air, you use the front brake to maintain the balance of the bike as you slow down and/or keep the bike from coming over the top and down on your head. Stunt bikes have modified suspensions in order to do this which makes them too rough to ride on normal roads.

Unless your young and heal quickly...

I still say that if they kept the for the myth spoked wheel, when the poll went between the spokes, it would have taken them out, the front tire would collapse and the support strut would hit the ground stopping the bike and maybe flipped a couple of times.
