Lam Ching Ying ( 林 正英 )(1952-1997)

Lam Ching Ying is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated, overlooked, misrepresented Martial Artists in the history of the art. I would say that most of the West immediately associates his name with Mr Vampire and the Hopping Vampire genre and with little, if anything, else.

To be honest I think Lam Ching Ying's acting ability far exceeded the constraints of the Hopping Vampire genre, as did his Comedic timing and, most importantly, his Martial Arts capabilities. Have a look at Red & Black, Prodigal Son, Eternal Combat, The Dead and the Deadly, Magnificent Butcher, The Martial Arts of Wong Fei Hung, Lover's Tear and School on Fire, (to name a few), and see for yourselves.

For me, Lam Ching Ying incorporated an awful lot of Art, History and Character into the Martial Art genre, something I think is sorely missing from the genre today. He was graceful, to the point he seemed to almost dance his way through the complex moves each Martial Art asked of him, and yet, for me, he also managed to convey beauty, power, strength and agility as he performed.

All in all, this is a tribute Music Video to the grace, agility and downright excellence Lam Ching Ying brought to the art of Martial Arts - and a small way in which I can say how much I miss not being able to see something new from him anymore.

Rest in Peace, Sifu, you are sorely missed.

  • RIP... what is the name of the video's song?

  • @Tarpaun - It's the Instrumental to Beyonce's Halo :-)

  • Lam Ching-Ying is a legend.

Which movie is the first fighting clip taken from?

  • @mygrannieannie - If you mean the initial one where Lam Ching Ying is dressed in his infamous yellow Taoist Priest gear with the hopping vampire, that's "The Musical Vampire" - if you mean the proceeding clip that's "Mad, Mad, Ghost" :-)

  • Sorry, I may be missing out on something, how did he die?

  • @Beastmast3r5254 - He died of Liver Cancer at the age of 44 years. Some say it was due to excessive drinking, however, it was later discovered that his Brother had died 6 months previous to him of the same ailment - so who knows...

    :-)
