Are you saying that not all Shiites believe in a hidden imam who will appear when chaotic conditions require him? And that that core Shiite belief sounds ridiculous? I believe that the sects on each side of Islam's schism believe in the immutable, unchangeable truth of their takes on Islam. Surely all Shiites believe, ridiculously or not, as I suggested. But what have I to do with Christianity?

Oh thanks for resurrecting a year-old discussion.
One could make aspects of Christanity sound as ridiculous. It's very dangerous to categorise any group as all holding the exact same beliefs and opinions, whether you're saying that all Americans are xenophobic, shallow, hedonistic materialists or that all Muslims are violent extremists.
Also, cultures which feel they are under attack tend to become more conservative and traditional.

Why? Because Israel is guided by a great deal more common sense than is Iran, where, I believe, the hidden Imam is awaited and whose coming can be prompted by chaos on this planet. Israelis are far too sensible to believe such fictions.
