My new synthesiser arrived a few days ago, the Ion. Here I'm just playing around with part of the Maximo Park song "Books from Boxes" and the arpeggiator. Great fun :)

My timing is off and this is just a snippet, but I thought I'd upload it anyway. Work in progress, the plan is to tidy it up and add some guitar or something when I'm not so busy, but it depends whether or not it sounds good. No idea why the video went all dark!

PS. although I'm using a pattern here, it is actually possible to get the arpeggiator to do the traditional up, down, up/down by using the "ant march" setting and selecting a length of 2. Play with the "order" setting to choose up (forward), down (backward) and up/down (r-n-r x).

  • i'm in love with those sounds!

i've been thinking of getting the ion for a while now. do you think it would be too rough to handle for a beginner or would i manage it?

  • actually i'm finding it really easy for a newbie. the menu system is really intuitive, the layout is sensible and i found the yahoo 'alesis-ion' group, those guys are a great source of help. highly recommended, for the money it's the most versatile synth out there i reckon.

  • Considering the Ion has been discontinued a while, where did you get it from? I've been looking for one.

  • eBay - cheap because it has a scratch on the front panel, which I don't care about really as long as it sounds good :)

I think I was lucky - mine seems fairly reliable, whereas most people advise to buy one new, as some of the earlier runs had reliability issues.
